The origin of the name “film” comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term film is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies.

L’origen del terme “pel·lícula” prové de pel·lícula fotogràfica que històricament fou el primer mitjà per enregistrar i projectar imatges en moviment. Existeixen altres termes per a referir-se a una pel·lícula: motion picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play o flick. En els Estats Units s’empra el terme movie, mentre que a Europa és més popular el terme film. Altres termes s’utilitzen en general dins aquest camp, com: gran pantalla, setè art, cinema, etc.

L’origine del termine “pellicola” deriva dal fatto che la pellicola fotografica è storicamente stato il mezzo primario per la registrazione e la proiezione di immagini in movimento. Esistono altri termini per riferirsi ad una pellicola: motion picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play e flick. Un modo comune per chiamare le pellicole negli Stati Uniti è movie, mentre in Europa, è preferito il termine film. Altri termini si utilizzano in generale in questo campo come: il grande schermo, lo schermo d’argento, il cinema, ecc.
