In film theory, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism. As with genre in a literary context, there is a great deal of debate over how to define or categorize genres. Besides the basic distinction in genre between fiction and documentary, film genres can be categorized in several ways.

En teoria del cinema, el terme gènere es refereix al mètode basat en les semblances dels elements narratius amb què les pel·lícules es construeixen. La majoria de teories del cinema provenen dels gèneres literaris. Com en la literatura, hi ha una gran debat en com definir les categories o gèneres. Secondo la cinematografia, il termine genere si riferisce al metodo basato sulle analogie tra gli elementi narrativi da cui sono costruiti i film. La maggior parte dei copioni dei film derivano dal criticismo del genere letterario. Come nella letteratura, vi è un grande dibattito su come definire o classificare i generi. Oltre alla distinzione fondamentale tra fiction e documentario, i generi cinematografici possono essere classificati in diversi modi.
